Client Profile: Harbin Clinic
![]() Harbin Clinic Manages Increased Volume at Multiple Sites with Browser-based LIS Challenge Harbin Clinic needed a way to streamline the process of ordering lab tests and distributing results to multiple locations. Most importantly, the solution needed to seamlessly integrate with various clinic information systems and several automated clinical testing devices. Solution Harbin Clinic turned to CyberLAB® 7.0, Aspyra's browser-based laboratory information system (LIS) that is designed for multi-specialty clinics with multiple performing locations. Results CyberLAB (and CyberRAD) integrate seamlessly with Harbin Clinic's electronic medical records (EMR) solution, enabling clinicians to place orders and view results through the familiar interface of their EMR. This tight integration allows Harbin Clinic to provide a more complete patient medical record to caregivers, and enhance the overall patient experience. Based in Rome, Ga., Harbin Clinic is the largest privately owned multi-specialty physician clinic in Georgia, and includes 130 doctors practicing in 33 different medical specialties. Harbin Clinic has locations in Rome, Calhoun, Cartersville, Cedartown and Bremen, Ga. Six years ago, the clinic decided to automate their laboratory, selected Aspyra as its vendor, and purchased the CyberLAB LIS. During the third quarter of 2004, Harbin Clinic upgraded its existing CyberLAB solution to version 7.0 to take advantage of its new browserbased technology, which helps facilitate a higher level of integration with other solutions at a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). "When we first began using CyberLAB in 1998 we decreased lost charges in the lab by 20%," said Terri Ott, laboratory manager at Harbin Clinic. "So when it came time to upgrade our existing lab solution, it was natural for us to turn to Aspyra once again, since we realized substantial benefits and ROI with their solutions in the past." Harbin Clinic's information technology (IT) strategy focuses on providing physicians and nurses with a single point of access for patient information, making the EMR serve as a front-end interface to multiple departmental systems. Although physicians and nurses access lab results through the EMR, lab technologists, phlebotomists, and other clinic personnel work directly with the CyberLAB solution. "Our lab technologists find the CyberLAB system easy to use, and new users can learn the system quickly with minimal training," Ott said. "Since the CyberLAB Order Entry Decision Support rules automatically route the test to the reference laboratory, generate the reference laboratory packing list, and make proper annotation on the clinical report of the performing location, it further streamlines the order entry process and eliminates work for the order entry staff." From the IT perspective, CyberLAB version 7.0 provided Harbin Clinic with additional benefits. "The browser-based architecture of the LIS solution enables us to better leverage our existing network, and the design of the system makes it easier for our department to set up users and get them using the system with minimal effort," said Tom Fricks, CIO of Harbin Clinic. "After our initial success with CyberLAB, our organization also purchased CyberRAD®, which is Aspyra's radiology information system. Using CyberLAB and CyberRAD over the past several years, we've realized our biggest ROI in the areas of customer service and patient safety due to scheduling efficiencies, accurate tracking via bar coding, and quicker turnaround of results." Further enhancements to the CyberLAB solution that Harbin Clinic is planning to complete include the implementation of a bi-directional order and result interface that connects CyberLAB with the clinic's external reference laboratories. In addition, Harbin Clinic plans to take advantage of the Aspyra's WebGateway™ module, which enables clinicians to securely order lab tests and access results from remote locations that are outside of organization's firewall.
